Almost unbearable. Stroboscopic sequence of still pictures on coloured background, with the same word (Destroy ?) repeated over and over and over and over.

Black and white pictures of the "american way of life" style showed a an extremely high pace, with again that stroboscopic effect.

Word movie

Each frame a new word. Black on white. Those words, always differents allways have in common one letter with the next, at the same position. These non moving letter, in turn, form words such as "CHROME BREAK VESSEL BURNIN...". All this moves so fast it's not easy to read.

Something you could classify as well as "experimental pornography", "comportemental study" or "art movie". You can see a couple (man and woman) making love but not having babies, dogs having sex and then having pupies, another couple (two men) making love without consequences, and about ten naked children playing together, unconcious of sex.

Zbigniew Rybczynski

Zupa

Surrealist popart animation. This is surealist for the themes (for instance, somebody is eaten by his spoon), this is popart for the aesthetic of tainted photomontage of everyday life scenes and objects.

Tango

Really one of the best short movie I ever see, and a realy exceptional technical masterpiece. A mindbogingly complex extention of a very simple concept. All the action takes place in a small room. A ball enters the room through the opened window, then a child follow his ball, takes it and jump back outside through the window. This sequence is repeated again and again and an awfull lot of other repetitive sequences will happen in the same room that will quickly be filled with a LOT of people (more than 20 !). All repeating their actions. In a manner that one action is needed to perform another (somebody, for instance, puts a plate on a table. and another will need the plate to eat. then, he will take the plate with him in order that the place is clean again to dispose another plate and so on). 8 minutes of happiness.

The discret charm of the diplomacy

While diplomats take a meal around a banquet table, farm animals walk on the other side of the table.

The fourth dimension

Wringly twisty love story. People and things enrolls together through the use of heavy synthetic computer imagery (not so heavily 3D that you'd imagine: I'm quite shure this is a variant on the "Pas de Deux" effect of MacLarren). Images are slow and clean and conceptualy simple (two objects and an empty room, usually). Still, in many scenes the result is complex and stunning enough not to be boring. Just imagine a mirror slowly enroling around a woman with the deformed image of that woman in the mirror and reflected spots of light on the wall of the room.

A group of american tourists visit the scene of the steps in Eisenstein's movie "Battleship Potemkine".

Manhattan

Blue keyed videos scenes (obviously inspired by the american way of life, but some of them are quite weird) over Manhattan landscapes.

Washington

Blue keyed videos scenes (a bit more classic: that's Washington) over Washington landscapes.

Plamuz

A Jazz concert (by Zbigniew Namystowsky ?) filmed in false colours mostly pure black, blue, red, magenta, green, cyan, yellow and white, all mixed with geometric patterns and multiple point of views. This seems a first to be the usual old fashionned video computer effect... but... it ends up with something extremely nice.

Oj! niemage sie zartrzumac

A play on time. At first your time is slowed down (ie you walk at a normal pace into a landscape where anything looks accelerated) and, as you continue, time scales progressively changes.

Swieto

Every day rural life in black and white artificialy coloured pictures (like in zupa). By the way, they watch "Oj! niemage sie zartrzumac" at the television :-)

Media

Somebody (is this Zbigniew Rybczynski ?) plays with a balloon in a television set.

Nowa Ksiazka

A set of nine (not so) independant cameras in a city. You see them all and as characters appears and disappears, you discover where they are and what you would feel if you could see anything anywhere at anytime.

The making of a silent movie "à la Méliès" in a modern american city and with an intrusive boy playing soccer.

French documentary about otakus by a man that seems not to like them but try to understand the phenomena. Covers the whole range of otakus.

Otaku No Video

Fake japanese documentary about anime/manga otakus, and the adventure of a teenager that will become the king of otaku and create a huge otakuland.

Tokyo-ga

Documentary about Tokyo in general and the japanese director Ozu in particular. Covers golf clubs, wax food replicas, patchinko, and so on.

Exorsister, L'enfer des infirmieres

You know TV series such as "Bioman" with a superhero fighting against latex beasts. You know what a porn movie can be. This movie combines both at the same time, giving quite an astounding result.

L'Empire des Sens

La barriere de la chair

An early Suzuki's movie. 5 whores unites to defend themselves against proxenetes and US soldiers. Their only important rule: never make love for free. If this happens, the girl that did it get punished (ie: tortured) and is excluded from the comunity.

Sonatine, mélodie mortelle (Sonatine)

The classic maffia (yakuza) story, with war between rival yak families, hero that will ultimately win against the enemy organization and so on. Althought the plot is extremely classic, the way the story is telled is quite unusual, both aesthetically and because of the fact that nothing happens in most of the scenes: they are just waiting and getting mad.

Kids return (Kids return)

Two teenagers rackets their school fellows, skip the class, does nasty jokes and so on. One will enter the Yakuza organization and the other will become a boxer, but both of them will fail in their ambitions.

Premier amour, version infernale (Hatsukoi Jigokuhen)

He's a pedophile (or at least, he is so affraid about sex that he can only do it with innocent children). She is an erotic model involved in the SM milieu. They will fall in love.

Histoire du Japon racontée par une hôtesse de bar (Nippon sengo shi: Madamu Omboro no seikatsu)

Miss Omboro, a barmaid (not to say a 'madam'), tells the story of her life through an interview. She also comments old japanese actualities footage that are used to show the history of post world war II japan in parallel to her own life.

Eijanaika

L'anguille

A man kills his unfaithfull wife while she's making love with another man and directly go to the police denouncing himself. After a few years in jail, he's liberated with his domesticated anguilla.

Death Powder (Desu Pawuda)

Three people steal a cyborg and ties it on a bed frame in a cellar. They are unaware that the cyborg emits a toxic psychedelic powder (the death powder) that drives them in an 'altered dimension' where they becomes the slaves of the Scar People. Worse: their body mutates in a giant pile of rotten flesh constelated with eye-mouthes and unnamed organs. This is a low budget movie layering computer and electronic imagery with monster/violent footage in something nearest of a drug induced trip than of a movie.

Guinea pig 1: devil's experiment (Za ginipiggu: Akuma no jikken)

During 43 minutes, a young woman serves as a guinea pig for various atrocities. This is an extremely violent and a bit too much realistic movie, realised in an amateurish manner that still add to the impression that it might come from the secret pornographic library of some demented pervert.

Guinea pig 2: Android of Notre Dame (Za ginipiggu 2: Notorudamu no andoroido)

A mad scientist kidnaps young girls to serve as human parts and guinea pigs in extremely gorish absurd experiments (mostly consisting of the connection of various organs of the unconscenting but still alive girls to some pieces of computer equipment). Yet, contrarily to devil's experiment, there are no attempt to stick with reality and there is some kind of story.

Guinea pig 4: Mermaid in a manhole (Za ginipiggu 4: Manhoru no naka no ningyo)

A painter, mostly inspired by dirt and floating shits of the surrounding sewer, finds a mermaid and takes her home. She will slowly die in the painter's bathtub while he draws her.

All the movie turns around food. It alternates small food related sketches with the life of a noodle master that will teach a woman how to create the best noodle restaurant.

A tax employee decide to begin her crusade against all those bloody tax frauders.

Pinnochio 964 (964 Pinnochio)

Pinnochios are androids made for the sole purpose of beeing sex toys for women. A woman who bought the 964 and is unsatisfied with it (it doesn't stay permanently erect !) erases 964's memory and throw it out on the street. The poor little thing, obviously malfunctionning, is sheltered by another woman who takes care of him and allows him to retrieve his memory. And now, that blood splashing creature is out to seek help from its creators.

In a medieval climate of fight between warrior clans, peoples are found murdered in a very unusual way: they have been eaten alive by butterflies. Tsui Hark's first film (after a lot of TV serials) is a successfull attempt in setting new standards in martial arts movies... and a comercial flop.

Green Snake (Qing She)

Green Snake and White Snake disguise themselves in human girls to discover what love is and to become wiser through this knowledge. A boudhist monk, tracking all sorts supernatural creatures, will fight against those two Snakes. A highly aesthetic and colourfull story, a few erotism (very decent, this is not an adult movie), acrobatic fights and a fairly exotic sensation.

The lovers (Liang Zhu)

She's young and undisciplined. Her rich father want to mary her to another important family, but for this, she must have something in her brain. Her mother decide to disguise her as a boy and send her to a school. There, she will fall in love with a brilliant but poor student. It begins as a nice comedy lacking a little bit of the visual niceness of his other films. It ends on a very sad and fantastic tone. This is Tsui Hark's version of "Butterly lovers", a widely known legend and opera. Needless to say that the music is both important and beautifull even if this isn't a filmed opera as F. Miterrand's version of Madama Buterfly.

Dans la nuit des temps (Love in the time of Twilight, Rua Yue Jia Qi)

A young man and a girl met during the "mates day", but far from falling in love, their encounter is an explosion of hate. The man, victim of a plot, dies and finds himself prisonner in an electric wire. Nice and extremely visual love story, with action, acrobatic fights, ghosts, time travels and playfull paradoxes as in "Back to the Future".

Final Option (Fei hu xiong xin)

Sex & Zen

A rich student of the XVIIth china, decieved by his small penis decides that he needs the transplant of a horse sex. This is supposed to be a classic of Honk Kong cinema but it fall quite short to what you can expect. This is just an ordinary erotic movie. Only two scenes are worth seeing: a wedding night with the wife half disgusted half worried about sex and the grossly comic transplant, with a drunk mad surgeon.

Eat Drink Man Woman (Yinshi nan nu)

Cyclo

Cyclo hardly lives by transporting people with a bycicle-taxi. Some day, an associate of his boss stole his taxi. This is the begining of the end for Cyclo and a long travel deeper and deeper in the hell. Aesthetic and very crude. The last scene of suicide with blue painting shouldn't be missed.

Plan 9 from outer space

Ed Wood is considered the worst film director of all time, and Plan9 is Ed Wood's "Citizen Kane". Just for a laugh, see this impressing error list collected by Mr Dauber. Bela Lugosi died while the movie was realised: somebody else replaced him on the missing scenes. The only problem is that this person didn't even remotely ressembled Bela Lugosi... but every problem has its cure: he played the scenes hiding his head behind a piece of cloth !

Monty pitonesque story of aliens invading the earth to convert human beeing into snacks "the galaxies new taste sensation !". This is an ultra low cost production (and Peter Jackson's first movie) but it compensate this with tons of humor and ideas. This is a gore film, very gore indeed.

Trois vies et une seule mort

Three slices of lifes that merges in a very unexpected manner. Gives you the feeling that the movie reel has been washed in hot water and that some characters and scenes has come off on other random places. Mastroiani has there the best occasion to show all the facets of his talent.

Something that wakes you up as 10.000 coffee cups would do ;-) and one of the only movie using video, film (color and monochromatic), photography, animation depending of the context.
